Opendoor closed its India offices

Opendoor was an online home-buying platform. It came from San Francisco. It closed its India offices. It opened those offices in 2024. The CEO was Kaz Nejatian. He said the company wanted to bring work back to the U.S. He also said the company would use smaller AI teams. The company did not say how many workers it affected. It did not say how much of the decision came from AI. Many people in Silicon Valley talked about this. They thought it was an early example of AI changing work. They made almost 100 billion dollars every year. Opendoor had about 250 workers in India. The company cut jobs everywhere. It had 1,470 workers last year. Now it had 1,042 workers. It had 184 workers outside the U.S. That was down from 342. The U.S. housing market was hard for online home-buying companies. Some investors gave their opinions. Sheel Mohnot said AI would replace many jobs in India. Keshav Lohia called it a "watershed moment" for AI. Phil Fersht said this was not just about jobs moving. He said companies needed less workers now. AI made work faster. He called this pattern "Services-as-Software." Varun Rekhi said AI could hurt India's export industry.
