NASA has announced the four astronauts for the Artemis III mission. The crew includes Randy Bresnik, Luca Parmitano, Andre Douglas, and Frank Rubio. They were presented at an event at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. Hundreds of people cheered for them. The mission is a test flight in low-Earth orbit. It has been designed to reduce risks before a lunar landing. It will launch no earlier than summer 2027 and last about two weeks. The plan involves three separate launches and two dockings. First, a Blue Origin lander test vehicle will go into orbit. It can stay there for up to 90 days. Then the astronauts will launch in Orion on top of a Space Launch System rocket. They will dock with the Blue Moon lander and test its life support systems. Later, SpaceX will launch a Starship. The crew will dock with Starship but will not enter it because it has no life support equipment. After all tests, the crew will undock and splashdown in the Pacific Ocean. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman has described the timeline as aggressive. He has expressed confidence in a 2027 launch. However, space industry experts consider the timeline challenging. A major problem occurred on May 28 when Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket exploded at its launch pad in Florida. Blue Origin expects to fly again by the end of 2026, but experts think it will take 12 to 18 months. NASA has said it will not launch Artemis III unless the landers are ready.
